HAPPY HUNTER's tea buyer, Hiroko Ishii, visited the Makaibari Tea Estate, the oldest tea estate in Darjeeling, to taste and purchase summer-picked black tea, second flush, and muscatel!
The traditional tea called "Muscatel" is made with an insect called a green fly.
Green flies are most prevalent in tea plantations just a few weeks before the rainy season begins.
The green flies bite into the juice from the leaves, which causes natural fermentation, causing the nibbled leaves to become rounded and pink stripes and spots to appear on the leaves. These leaves, called kakra leaves, create the fresh muscat flavor and aroma during the tea-making process. This is the traditional way of making muscatel.

Muscatel is not produced in all tea plantations.
The tea is organically grown, the tea fields are continuously monitored to check for the presence of green flies, and KAKRA LEAF has the high level of skill required for tea picking and processing.
Being able to obtain Muscatel, which is produced during a very limited period of the second flush, is a source of pride for tea buyers who purchase Darjeeling tea.

Tasting: The Pure China variety is characterized by its copper-brown color and rich, sweet taste. The second flush Muscatel, harvested in the summer of 2025, is a very dynamic, full-bodied black tea, with a depth of flavor reminiscent of oak and a hint of cinnamon, and a fresh fruitiness reminiscent of Muscat grapes, with these lingering aftertastes in the final notes, making it a traditional Muscatel black tea.
